Organic Resource Recovery System

The ORRS is a unique, patented protected1 to both on-site management of solid organic (food) waste, and a system to convert solid organics into a slurry thereby making it an ideal feedstock for anaerobic digesters to generate biogas renewable energy.

The ORRS consists of a mill, a holding tank and vacuum truck collection. Produce and other food related wastes are ground into slurry by a mill, reducing waste volume by an average of 5:1. The waste slurry is discharged into the holding tank where it is stored until collected by vacuum operated transport.




  • Smallest Footprint

    Compared to other types of food-waste collection systems (front-load bins, 62 or 95 gallon totes, etc.), the ORRS requires the smallest footprint - approximately 7' by 7' in total (when using in-ground storage tank).

  • No Odours

    Odours associated with waste storage, open bins and leaking compactors are all but eliminated.

  • Reduced Flies and Vermin

    Organic leachate around compactors, and open bin storage of food waste is a major breeding area for vermin, fruit flies and other insects. The ORRS eliminates this issue.

  • Extended Compactor Life

    Leachate, resulting from wet organic wastes such as fruits and vegetables, is acidic and therefore causes accelerated corrosion of waste compactors. Reducing the amount of liquid in the compactor will prolong compactor life.

  • Improved Working Conditions

    Organic waste processed through the ORRS needs to be handled only once. Unlike bins that must be moved to and from the loading dock for collection often twice or more per week, the ORRS only requires the waste to be taken to the mill.

  • Reduced Volume of Waste

    Grinding food waste into slurry provides maximum possible mass reduction (approximately 5:1). Therefore, waste can be stored, handled and transported in 1/5th the space of traditional front-load bins or tote-type handling techniques.

  • Reduced Truck Traffic

    The 3000 imp gallon ORRS storage tank (various sizes available based on site restrictions, space and need), combined with the "odour-free" characteristic of the liquefied waste, allows for extended time between waste pickups. Collection frequency is significantly reduced.

  • Accurate Waste Collection and Pricing

    Unlike container collection programs where the container is collected at a flat rate regardless of weight or capacity (i.e. half empty containers are billed the same rate as full ones), the ORRS liquefies all waste to slurry thus creating the heaviest possible product by volume. ORRS waste is billed by volume, not weight. Therefore, the generator only pays for waste generated, regardless how much is collected per pickup.

  • Convenient Collection

    Unlike totes or bins that must be handled two or three times, outside storage tanks allow the collection of waste without disruption to the store, or store staff.

  • Broadest Waste Acceptance

    The ORRS has the broadest food waste acceptance range of any organic waste system. In addition to the typical produce wastes, the ORRS is able to accept meat and dairy products, flower shop wastes, liquids (such as milk, juice, etc.), waste fats and drippings from in-store food preparation, etc.



The ORRS can be installed with an underground or aboveground storage tank configuration. Underground installations allow for larger (3000 imp gal) storage capacity and less mechanical parts are required on the mill. The above ground units incorporate a pump system to transport the slurry from the mill to a heated/insulated (1200 imp gal) storage tank.

The ORRS mill has been designed and is manufactured to meet or exceed all Canadian and US standards - including safety. The ORRS tank is made of fiberglass reinforced plastic, and engineered to below/above ground specification.

The liquefied waste (slurry) is collected using vacuum trucks and transported to approved organic waste recycling facilities.
